  • caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis
  • intracellular infection, slow growth, dormant microorganism
  • MDR-TB, multi-drug resistant TB, resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin

COMPOUND DRUG THERAPY FOR TB

A
  • 2 MONTHS isoniazid+rifampicin+pyrazinamide +/- ethambutol
  • followed by 4 months of isoniazid and rifampicin

longer treatment if bone or joint involvement or resistance

CHARACTERISTICS OF ISONIAZID

A
  • MOA inhibition of synthesis of mycolic acids, essential elements of mycobacterial walls
  • limited use to TB
  • bacteriostatic on resting organism
  • bactericidal on active growing bacilli
  • s/e dose-dependent . REDUCES METABOLISM OF ANTI-EPILEPTIC AGENTS
