TUBERCOLOSIS Flashcards
1
Q
CHARACTERISTICS OF TUBERCULOSIS DISEASE
A
- 2ND LEADING cause of death worldwide due to microorganisms
- caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis
- intracellular infection, slow growth, dormant microorganism
- MDR-TB, multi-drug resistant TB, resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin
2
Q
COMPOUND DRUG THERAPY FOR TB
A
- 2 MONTHS isoniazid+rifampicin+pyrazinamide +/- ethambutol
- followed by 4 months of isoniazid and rifampicin
longer treatment if bone or joint involvement or resistance
3
Q
CHARACTERISTICS OF ISONIAZID
A
- MOA inhibition of synthesis of mycolic acids, essential elements of mycobacterial walls
- limited use to TB
- bacteriostatic on resting organism
- bactericidal on active growing bacilli
- s/e dose-dependent . REDUCES METABOLISM OF ANTI-EPILEPTIC AGENTS
