Tsunamis Flashcards
How are tsunamis mostly formed?
Tsunamis are mostly fromed by earthquakes on convergent margins through the motion of subduction located out at sea.
What is step 1 to the thailand tsunami?
The tsunami bean with the Indo-Australian plate subducting below the Eurasian plate.
What is step 2 to the thailand tsunami?
The eurasian plate became wedged to the Indio-Australian plate which caused the plates to bend. This caused stress to build up in the area.
What is step 3 to the thailand tsunami?
Suddenly the stress is realeased and the Indo-Australian plate was uplifted several metres. This energy not only created a massive 9.0 earthquake, but displaced the water into a huge wave.
What is step 4 of a tsunami?
Large waves began to move away from the earths epicentre travelling up to 500mph. The wave started to spread like a rippple.
What is step 5 of a tsunami?
As the wave moves to a shallower seabed, the wave increases in size but slows down. When the wave reaches inland they were 25 metres in height. Thisdestroyed everything in its path and killed 250,000 people.
