Tsunami π Flashcards
1
Q
What does the size of tsunami waves depend on?
A
- cause of the wave
- the distance travelled
- water depth
2
Q
What will the wave do over time?
A
It will retreat and increase in size
They compress together
3
Q
What causes a tsunami? X2
A
Ocean floor is uplifted due to seismic activity
The water is displaced
4
Q
Negatives of a tsunami? X5
A
- cause destruction for several miles
- ruin the land/ soil
- cause deaths and injuries
- contaminates food and water supplies
- diseases and illnesses spread
5
Q
Can you predict tsunamis?
What can you do?
A
No way to predict them
Can give people early warning
6
Q
What ways can give people early warning signs?
A
- tsunami early warning systems are in place in the Pacific and Indian oceans
- use seismic sensors to detect undersea earthquakes
- DART system ( Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami)
7
Q
How does a DART system work? X5
A
- uses sea bed sensors and surface buoys to monitor pressure change
- when waves are detected information is sent back via satellites
- stations review the info
- uses computer modelling to estimate the size and direction of tsunami
- people at risk are warned
