Hotspots And Mantle Plumes π Flashcards
1
Q
What are hotspots?
A
Stationary areas where a hot thermal mantle plume rises from deep within the earth
2
Q
What occurs above a mantle plume? X5
A
- Magma rises through the cracks and erupts to form volcanoes at the surface
- As the plates move over these hotspots the volcanoes are pushed away and new ones form in their place
- As the volcanoes move away they cool to produce islands
- This may result in a chain of islands
- May subside together with erosion and eventually sink beneath the waves
3
Q
What are intra-plate earthquakes?
A
Earthquakes away from plate boundaries
4
Q
Name one theory about infra-plate earthquakes
A
- Ancient fault lines
- built up of stress is thought to deactivate the fault causing earthquakes
5
Q
Name another theory about intra-plate earthquakes
A
- collision of tectonic plates may fracture the crust well away from the boundary
- these fractures may produce large earthquakes over a long period of time
