Kemps test (sitting and standing)
Slump tests
Kemps test
Sitting:
looks for:
– acute inflammatory lesions
– facet irritation
– local pain strain/sprain
– spinal fracture
+VE:
– symptoms produced on compression
– local pain
How:
– patient sitting
– compress body in neutral
– add extension and compress
– add side bending and compress
– add rotation and compress
– asymptomatic side first
Standing (active):
How:
– get patient to touch their hamstring with the opposite hand
– then get them to touch even lower with the opposite hand
Slump test
Looks for:
– increases pressure on NR
– LOOKS TO PROVOKE SYMPTOMS
+VE:
– radicular pain down back of leg (sciatica)
How:
– pt sat and slump shoulder forward
– still no symptoms, passively flex their head forward
– still no symptoms, passively extend their asymptomatic leg
– still no symptoms, dorsiflex the foot of the extended leg
– do the same with the symptomatic side
