Cervical tests

Jacksons compression
Distraction
Spurlings tests
Looks for:
– cervical radiculopathy (increases the pressure on the cervical nerve roots)
– LOOKS TO PROVOKE SYMPTOMS
+VE:
– pain radiating down the arm on compression of the neck
How its performed:
– compress head in neutral
– extend head then compress
– add side bending and compress
– add rotation and compress
– do asymptomatic side first then the symptomatic side
Jacksons compression test
looks for:
– increases pressure on the nerve root
– LOOKS TO PRVOKE SYMPTOMS
+ VE:
– increased radicular pain down the upper limb in a dermatomal distribution
How:
– rotate head to asymptomatic side and compress
– repeat with the other side
Distraction test
Looks for:
– LOOKS TO ALLEVIATE SYMPTOMS
– decreasing pressure on nerve root
+VE:
– reduction in symptoms shows nerve root compression and radicular pain
– increase in pain may show a ligament problem, can torsion the ligaments so need to be careful as the test can damage them it self
How:
– hand around chin, hand on occiput
– lift the head to reduce symptoms
