Q

2 GUI ‘s for TSM DP for VE, which ones?? and what other interface is available?

A

1) vSphere GUI (as a standalone webinterface (new in TSM for VE 7.1) & as a plugin for vSphere client .
2) vCloud GUI (for vApps), via standalone webinterface (url) only.
3) Dataprotection for VMware Recovery Agent (to recover individual files and (near instant) volumes)

8
Q

what is the difference between full VM Instant restore and full VM instant access ?

A

access: the VM is not restored, but simply made available, it is “mounted’ ; TSM functions as a datastore that you read from directly, no physical restore is done.

9
Q

what is a “proxy” ?

A

This is the (physical or virtual) server that performs the offloaded backups and is also called the vStorage backup Server (VBS). It has the TSM backup archive client installed that performs the VMware backup function.

Q

What is a datamover?

A

An individual backup process that performs the VMware guest backups. It moves the VM data from the datacenter. Each datamover is associated with one or more Tivoli Storage Manager backup schedules.
A single datamover instance can create multiple, concurrent backup sessions. Each proxy host will have at least one datamover configured.

Q

How is file level recovery supported in TSM for VE ?

A

use the Dataprotection for VMware Recovery Agent Interface to choose a snapshot that was made + the VM that you want. You can then mount that VM onto a diskdrive and access the diskdrive, browse through it and then choose the file, so that you can copy it to the restore location; TSM functions as the datastore for this VM.

Q

what is the difference between “ full vm restore” and “ full vm instant restore” ?

A

With full restore the VM becomes available only after the full restore. In case of “instant restore” the VM becomes available as soon as it is mounted and the recovery comtinues in the background.

Q

how is DataProtection for VMware installed?

A

download the software, click “ setup.exe” to start the installshield wizard, typical install, prereqs are installed, then the DP for VMWare Suite is installed, enter vCenter server name (where TSM connects to), install device driver, close wizard, restart VCenter server machine, login to the restarted VCenter server machine , you will then be able to close the installshield wizard,

17
Q

There ar 2 possible environments that you can protect.
and that you choose from during installation. It is 1 of the 2 and you cannot revert unless you re-install/de-install. Which 2 environments?

A

vSphere and vCloud

18
Q

After installaton the GUI automatically starts up and starts the configuration wizard. What is being done during configuration?

A

TheTSM server is identified (hostname + un/pw) and the relevant nodenames and domain name are identified and un/pws are set. Then the nodes are registered within TSM as well a startup files and services configured.

19
Q

What type of TSM nodes are registered during configuration?

A

-vCenter node (represents your vCenter)
-VMCLI node (VMware Command Line Interface node, it connects the TSM server with the datamovers)
-datacenter node (represents a datacenter within the GUI Domain to the TSM server)
-datamover node (performs the backup/restore operation, connected to a datacenter node)
-

20
Q

What isthe GUI domain? when is it defined?

A

The set of datacenters that the vCenter manages. It is a domain setting in TSM. The datacenter nodes and datamover nodes are registered to that Domain. It is set by the configuration wizard.

21
Q

Is Instant Acces/Instant Restore supported when storing VMWare backup images directly to tape?

A

No.

22
Q

Can meta data (control) data of the backup of vm images be stored on tape?

A

No, on disk only. (Devtype=disk or FILE, VTL ok)

23
Q

which option file setting defines the management class for the storage of the meta data when doing vmware image backup?

A

Vmctlmc (overrides the default mgmt class)

24
Q

At what level are backups being done by TSM DP for VE?

A

block-level

25
Q

Does a VM need to be powered on for backup?

A

no, it can be offline also

26
Q

What is backed up when doing a full VM backup?

A

it is a snapshot of all the disk volume sof a VM (at block-level)
