Step 1:effect of war
A
- Russians were heavily defeated
- 1 million were killed/wounded or taken prisoner by the end of 1914
- many died without weapons
- they blamed the officers

A
- shortage of workers and food
- prices of goods were rising
- unemployment
- people began to lose confidence in the government

A
- September 1915, Nicholas takes over the government
- Tsarina was in charge
- people mistrusted her because she was German
- Rasputin gave them a bad reputation

Step 4: losing support
A
- Support for the Tsar and Tsarina began to decrease
- they were blamed for allowing the situation to develop
- the winter of 1916 was very bad

Step 5: the revolution begins
A
- By March 1917, the situation had become desperate.
- there was a serious mood of discontent
- 40,000 workers from a big engineering works went on strike
- more riots from women

Step 6:the army takes sides
A
- March 12 was a decisive day
- the soldiers in Petrograd refused to fire on the crowds
- they joined in with the strikes and the women on the streets and marched to the Duma to demand that it take control of the government

- March 7th: Patilov steel workers went on strike
- March 10th: c.250,000 workers were on strike. Industry stopped
- March 12th: The Duma took control and set up a Provisional Comittee to take over the government

- The Tsar ordered the soldiers to break up the strikes by force
- they refused
- the Petrograd Soviet was set up
- 15th March: the Tsar tried to return to Petrograd but was blocked
- He issued a statement announcing his abdication
