TS3 Flashcards
What does the safety of blood transfusion depend on?
Meticulous attention to detail at each stage leading to and during transfusion
What causes more than 50% of fatalities during a blood transfusion?
Immediate haemolytic transfusion reactions
Other than haemolytic transfusion reactions, what causes the remained of fatalities during a blood transfusion?
Post-transfusion hepatitis
What pre-transfusion compatibility tests can be performed?
Blood Grouping
Antibody Screening
What is the purpose of blood grouping?
ABO & RhD groups determined
What is the purpose of Antibody screening?
Patient’s serum screened for atypical antibodies which may cause significant reduction in survival of transfused red cells
How is antibody screening performed?
Patient’s serum tested against red cells from at least two group O donors expressing a wide range of red cell antigens for detection of IgM red cell alloantibodies
and IgG antibodies
If antibody screening comes back positive, what needs to be done?
Blood group specificity of the antibody should
be determined using a panel of typed red cells
