The organism spread from skin to the lymph nodes and eventually to brain causing encephalitis.
C/F:
In the acute form, a cyclical fever spike occurs (every 2 weeks)
The initial lesion is an undulated skin ulcer (trypanosomal chancre).
Encephalitis occurs characterized by insomina and mood changes followed by muscle tremors, slurred speech that progress to somnolence and coma.
Untreated disease is usually fatal as a result of pneumonia.
treatment
Suramin in early disease. Suramin plus melarsoprol if CNS symptoms occur
