What was Troy?

A

Troy was a city in Greek Homers ‘Iliad’.

It was once thought to be mythical.

What happened regarding Troy in 1822?

A

A british scholar called Charles McClaren suggested the remains of Troy might be in Turkey.

He suggested a mound called Hisarlik near the Dardanelles.

The Dardanelles is a narrow sea linking Black Sea and Aegean Sea.

What happened regarding Troy in 1873?

A

The German archeologist Heinrich Schliemann began digging in 1871.

In 1873, he uncovered the remains of an ancient city, which he believed to be Troy.

He also found a treasure of gold and silver, which he called Priams treasure after the Trojan king Priam.

Priam was mentioned in th Iliad.

He smuggled the treasure out of Turkey and into europe.

Schliemann was digging in Mycenae and he discovered Aganemnons tomb.

A

Wilhelm Dorpfield showed that the Hisarlik mound was made of 9 layers.

This is because the city was rebuilt 9 times after earthquakes and fires.

Each time, the survivors built again on the rubble.

Which ‘Troy’ did Schliemann believe was Homers Troy?

A

He believed the second Troy was Homers Troy.

Dorpfield beleived it was the sixth.

Troys 1-5 are believed to date from the early Bronze age (c. 3000-1900 BC).

Experts now believe that Homers troy was the 12th Troy a layer of the 7th city, dating from about 1250 BC.
