What is the Archaic period for Greece?
Between 800 - 500 BC.
This is when the Bronze age gave way to the Iron age.
Greece emerged fromyears of invasion, depopulation and famine at this time
How did the Greek population change during the Archaic period?
The population grew rapidly.
City states were founded on the mainland and the islands.
They were called poleis, singular polis.
From this word came the words politics, police and polite.
What were the Greek cities like during the Archaic period?
They had a hilltop citadel or acropolis with a temple and a busy market place or agora.
Were there Greek colonies at this time?
Yes. Greek adventurers founded colonies.
They were on the coasts of the Aegean and Anatolia, around the black sea and the Mediterranean.
The colonies stretched as far away as Italy and France.
How were the Greek city states managed?
The city states were managed in one of three ways:
By Kings
By tyrants/dictators.
Governed by councils of wealthy arstocrats.
What did the Greek trading ships transport?
What did they physically look like?
They transported wheat, oil and wine.
The ships had eyes painted on the sides of the prow to scare away evil spirits.

In 508 BC
A man called Cleisthenes brought democracy into Athens.
Democracy means ‘rule by the people’.
Women, slaves and foreign born citizens were not allowed to vote in the Athenian assembly.
How did the arts change during the Archaic period?
Pottery and sculpture flourished.
How was athletics percieved by the Greeks?
What events took place?
The Greeks loved athletics.
It formed a part of religeous rituals.
There were four Panhellenic (all Greece) events.
They were called the Olympic, Pythian. Isthmian and Nemean games.
The Olympic games was first held in 776 BC and became the most important.
They were held every four years.
