Athens was a centre of culture.
It was wealthy from its silver mines.
It produced a great and powerful navy to protect itself.
How was Sparta remarkable?
It was a military state.
It was ruled by two kings.
Its soldiers were trained to be tough and self disciplined.
What some details about the Greek and Spartan soldiers?
The Greek soldiers were called hoplites.
They fought on foot with round shields, bronze crested helmets and spears.
The Spartan soldiers invented a packed wedge formation called a phalanx, which was hard to break up in battle.
What were the Greek warships like?
They had three banks of oars and were called triremes.
They had a narrow fighting deck and were aimed to ram sink other ships.
They were crewed by working people from the polis, not by slaves or professional sailors.
When did the Greeks clash with the Persian empire?
Between 499 and 449 BC
The Persians invaded twice, but were beaten in great battles at Marathon and Plataea.
What was the legacy of the Greek classical age?
It laid the foundations for almost all European civilizations that followed.
