Troubleshooting Ethernet Networks Flashcards
Structured approach to problem solving using identification, theory of cause, testing, planning, implementation, verification and documentation steps.
Troubleshooting methodology
In the context of incident response and breach reporting, escalation is the process of involving an expert and senior staff to assist in problem management.
Escalation
Amount of data that can be transferred over a network connection in a given amount of time typically measured in bits or bytes per second. Transfer rate is also described variously as data rate, bit rate, connection speed, transmission speed or bandwidth. Transfer rates are often quoted as the peak maximum theoretical value; sustained actual throughput is often considerably less.
Speed
Amount of data transfer supposed by a link in typical conditions. This can be measured in various ways with different software apps. Good out is typically used to refer to the actual useful data rate and the application layer ( less overhead from headers and lost packets).
Throughput
Attenuation or degradation of a signal as it travels over media, determines the maximum distance for a particular media type at a given bit rate.
Distance
Network transceiver in the host end system, patch cable between host and wall port, structured cable between wall port and patch panel (permanent link), patch cable between the patch panel port and switch port, network transceiver in the switch port (intermediate system)
Components at Ethernet layer 1
Used to verify integrity of a network interface port by checking that it can receive a signal generated by itself.
Loopback adapter
Visual indicator of the status of various devices including PC power supplies, batteries, drive activity and network activity. Network equipment LEDs usually show connection speed and activity
LED status indicators
Took that reports physical characteristics of a network link such as signal strength, noise and crosstalk
Cable tester
Used to measure the length of a cable run and are able to locate open and short circuits, kinks/sharp bends, and other imperfections in cables that could affect performance.
Time domain reflectometer (TDR)
Electrical meter capable of measuring voltage, resistance and current. Voltage readings can be used to determine whether for example a power supply unit is functioning correctly. Resistance readings can be used to determine wheys fuse or network cable is functioning correctly.
Multimeter
Took to verify termination/pin outs of cable
Wire map tester
Used to identify one cable within a bundle by applying an audible signal
Tone generator
Loss of signal strength between a transmitter and receiver due to attention and interference measured in decibels
Decibel loss ( dB loss)
+3dB means doubling, -3dB means halving
+6dB means quadrupling, -6dB relates to a quarter
+10dB means 10 times the ratio, -10dB is a tenth
