Network scope restricted to a single georgraphic location and owned/managed by a single organization
Local Area Network (LAN)
Typically used to refer to network devices designed for small-scale LANS. Small number of computing hosts that typically rely on a single integrated appliance for local and Internet connectivity.
Small Office/Home Office (SOHO)
Network scope that spans a large geographical area, incorporating more than one site and often a mix of different media types and protocols plus the use of public telecommunications networks.
Wide Area Networks (WANs)
Global network connecting national telecommunications systems. Most SOHO subscriber Internet access is facilitated via this.
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)
Manages allocation of IP addresses and maintenance of the top level domain space. Run by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
Focuses on solutions to Internet problems and the adoption of new standards published as Requests for Comments (RFCs)
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
Each digit can have one of ten possible values (0 through 9). Ex: 255= (2x10x10)+(5x10)+5
Base 10
Digit in any given position can only have one of two values (0 or 1) and each place position is the next power of 2. Ex: 11111111->255=(1x2^7)+(1x2^6)+(1x2^5)+(1x2^4)+(1x2^3)+(1x2^2)+(1x2^1)+1
Binary or Base 2
Base 16 with possible values of each digit represented by the numerals 0 through 9 and the characters ABCDEF
