Tropical Storms Flashcards
What is a tropical storm
A very powerful weather system characterised by strong winds that originate over tropical or subtropical waters
- they travel from east to west
- happens during late summer
How is a tropical storm formed
1) warm air rises from the ocean, as the warm air rises it leaves the area of low pressure. That space is filled with rushing air creating strong winds
2) the air that has rushed in now rises up and brings moisture. The moisture cools and condenses to form storm cloud and the eye wall
3) when the cool air descends it will from an area of calm in the centre called the eye
4) due to the winds near the equator the tropical storms starts to move from east to west .
Where do hurricanes form
Hurricanes form over the Atlantic Ocean or the eastern pacific ocean
Where do typhoons form
Typhoons form near the far east near places like Japan
Where do cyclones form
Cyclones form in the Indian ocean
Where are the tropical storms usually located
Between 5 degrees to 30 north or south of the equator
How does climate change affect tropical storms
It will make the tropical storms more widespread and powerful
- more warmer oceans temperatures will enable storms to form further away and feed the storm
What is a primary effect
A effect that is directly cause by the disaster
What is a secondary effect
A effect that will happen as a result of the primary effect
What are the primary effects of a tropical storm
- strong winds, heaving rain, storm surges
- infrastructure being destroyed
- ## people dying
What are the secondary effects of a tropical storm
- food and clean water shortages
- jobs being lost
- costs of damage
- people becoming homeless
When was the Saffir Simpson scale invented in
- 1971
- by Herbert saffir and robbert Simpson
- used to see much damage has been made
