Structure Of The Earth Flashcards
1
Q
What are the different layers of the Earth
A
- innercore
- outer core
- Mantle
- Crust
2
Q
What is the inner core
A
- made of iron and nickel
- as hot as the surface of the sun
3
Q
Outer core
A
- made of Iron and nickel
- liquid form of inner core
4
Q
Mantle
A
- made of magma and molten rock
- thickest part of the Earth
5
Q
Crust
A
- layer of solid rock that we live on
- very thin
6
Q
Tectonic plates
A
- Where the earth a has cracked and split into different pieces
- they are moved around fuelled by energy from the hot mantle
- made of either oceanic or continental crusts
7
Q
Oceanic crust
A
Tectonic plates which are found mainly under oceans
8
Q
Continental crust
A
Tectonics plates which are found mainly under land
9
Q
Destructive/convergent plate boundary
A
- a plate margin that involves an oceanic and continental plate
- moves towards each other
- the oceanic plate is forced underneath the continental plate
- this is known as subduction
10
Q
Constructive/divergent plate boundary
A
- where plate margins move away from each other and mantle separates
- usually found under oceans
11
Q
Conservative plate margin
A
- where two tectonic plates slide past each other
- friction causes them to get stuck
- pressure build up until friction is overcome
- usually under oceans
12
Q
Collision plate margins
A
- where two tectonics plates both push together and move above
- usually happens in continental plates
