Demographic Transition Model Flashcards
What is the demographic transition model ?
Demonstrates how the population fluctuates over time
Includes the birth rates , death rates, and natural increase and is split into 5 different stages
Demographic : the study of population
Transition : change
Model : simplified version of reality
Stage 1 :
Population is low but the birth and death rates are high
Stage 2 :
Population begins to increase as death rates fall due to the improvement in medicine and sanitations
Birth rates remain high
Stage 3 :
- Population is still increasing but more slowly now as birth rates fall due to increased acess to contraception and family planning, improvement in health care
- Death rate continues to fall but at a slower rate than at stage two
Stage 4 :
Population is now high but as birth rates and death rates are now low, the rate of population change is steadier than before
Stage 5 :
Population may start to decline at this point due to low birth rates and ageing population leading to a slight increase in death rate
