What is tropical sprue
A
Flattened villi that causes malabsorption that is most common in tropical regions (Caribbean, India and south east Asia)

A
Decreases gastric motility

Klebsiella, e.coli and enterobacter

Symptoms of tropical sprue
A
Diarrhoea, abdo pain, fatigue, weight loss and dehydration

What is the gold standard test
A
Biopsy of jejunum

What tests will precede a biopsy
A
Blood tests, abdominal x-ray, endoscopy (villous atrophy) and barium swallow

Treatment
A
Antibiotics and replace B12 and folate
