Trophic Level & food chains Flashcards
Autotrophs
They make their own food using sunlight or chemical energy
Methylmercury
Found in nature as a result of coal burning .
It can enter water system
Can be consumed by organism at lowest level of food chains
sticks to DNA and phospholipids
Heterotrophs
Organisms that eat others to gain energy
Herbivore
Organism that only eats plants or algae
Carnivore
Organisms that only eat meat (70% of diet must be meat to be one)
Omnivore
Organisms that can consume both plants and meat for energy
Decomposer
An organism that breaks down dead organisms into basic compounds such as CO2 and H2O
Food chain
Shows direction that material /energy flows from one organism to the next
Food web
Shows the relationships between organisms
Trophic level
Amount of energy held within that step in the food chain
Trophic Pyramid
Food chain with energy levels shown
