Biomes Flashcards
Tri-cellular model
Atmospheric circulation helps to explain the difference in pressure belts, temperature and precipitation a that exist across the globe .
Polar cell (0-60) ferrel cell (60-30) Hadley cell (30-equator) & mirror image on other side for Hadley
Biome
Collection of ecosystems sharing similar climatic conditions which are distinguished based on abiotic , biotic factors and climate .
Ex) tundra
Pressure
High pressure away from equator —> rain rises
Low pressure near equator —> water falls
Tropical rainforest
High constant temperature of about 70-80*F with high rainfall throughout the year , high temperature , direct sunlight and it’s located near the equator
Water standardizes temperature
Desert
Located 30*N or S because dry air descends here from losing water vapor in the tropics. Deserts have high temperature, low isolation and low precipitation.
They have temperature variation
meaning that when temperature is high in an area it’s very high and when it’s low it’s very low
Xerophytic Adaptations
Adaptations to reduce water loss in dry conditions
Tundra
Located in high altitudes & latitudes of (0-60) . They contain large amounts of permafrost(frozen soil ) with lack of isolation and water that is trapped in ice . The growing season usually lasts for 6 weeks of the year .
Temperate forests
Located 40-60 off equator where summers are warm and winters are cold. Overall they have less light and water with an average temperature . They also have two types of trees that strive there , evergreen(no loss of leaves) and deciduous(loss of leaves in winter) .
Grasslands
They exist where there is not enough water just to sustain forests .
Further from the ocean or water they have less consistent water and more changes in temperature
Closer to water have more consistent access to water and more consistent temperature ranges
Case
Human impacts on habitats destruction Degradation fragmentation and reconstruction
Organisms over exploitation, introduction of exotic competitors, predators and parasites and creating new pests
In response to the rapid decline of biomes in Homogenization of biotas, extinction , global warming and shortening of foodchains
