Mutations Flashcards
Founder effect
When a family unit leaves and finds a new colony leading to a small amount in variation
Genetic drift
Change in allele frequency due to random chance, not natural selection
Ex) an individual falling down the stairs and dying cannot repeat again
Bottleneck
When a pop dies almost completely off while lost of the variation in the popp disappear caused by natural selection or genetic drift
Gene flow
Two pop we separate transforming the popp into different groups through mutations and natural selection . However, if the two mate and exchange Dna they become similar again
Allopathic speciation
Physical barrier that separates two or more individuals from the popp
Ex)two squirrel pop separated by Colorado river . Over millions of year the two adapt differently in their environments creating grey vs. Brown squirrels
Sympatric speciation
Group is isolated from the original pop without a physical barrier .
Ex)cichlid fish in lake Victoria accrued mutations that better suit the prey at different levels in the lake leading to new mating behaviors .
