Trigeminal Sensory System Flashcards
sensory information from the face is carried by what nerve?
trigeminal nerve ( CN V )
why is the branching of the trigeminal nerve so extensive?
carries sensory information from the face, eyes, nasal cavity, maxillary and frontal sinuses, oral cavity
where does the trigeminal nerve emerge from?
pons
what kind of component does the trigeminal nerve have?
sensory and motor component
what kind of neuron is the trigeminal ganglion
pseudo unipolar neuron
three major branches of the trigeminal nerve that branch out into the face (pass info there)
ophthalamic nerve, maxillary nerve, mandibular nerve
includes carrying sensory info from the eye
ophthalmic nevre
carries sensory info to the middle region of the face
maxillary nerve
carries sensory info to the jaw bone
mandibular nerve
what are the 3 sensory nuclei of the trigeminal nerve?
spinal trigeminal nucleus, main sensory nucleus, mesencephalic nucleus
receives nociceptive, touch and non-discriminative/crude touch fibers from the face
spinal trigeminal nucleus
receives light touch and pressure fibers from the face; also receives proprioceptive information
main sensory nucleus
associated with proprioceptive afferents from the face (misplaced ganglion)
mesencephalic nucleus
begins in the mid-pons, extends to C3; blends with the substantial gelatinosa - receiving pain, temp and non-discriminative touch because of the A-delta and C fiber
spinal trigeminal nucleus
where does the primary afferent fiber (trigeminal nerve & ganglia) enter?
mid-pons
