Trigeminal Nerve 2 Flashcards
What is the course of the third division of the trigeminal nerve
it passes through the foramen ovale, into the infratemporal fossa
What makes the foramen ovale more prone to injury
it is not protected by bone like the other two exits of the branches of CNV
Where is the infra temporal fossa located
deep to the masseter muscle and zygomatic arch (to which the masseter attaches)
What is the infra temporal fossa closely associated with
both the pterygopalatine fossa, via the pterygomaxillary fissure and also communicates with the temporal fossa
What is the lateral boundary of the infratemporal fossa
ramus of mandible
What is the medial boundary of the infratemporal fossa
lateral pterygoid plate of sphenoid bone
What is the anterior boundary of the infra temporal fossa
posterior aspect of the maxilla
What is the posterior boundary of the infra temporal fossa
tympanic plate, mastoid and styloid process
What is the inferior boundary of the infra temporal fossa
angle of the mandible
What does the mandibular division provide sensorial innervation to
the lower face, hairy temple and anterior 2/3 of the tongue
What does the mandibular division provide parasympathetic innervation to
submandibular, sublingual and parotid gland
What does the mandibular division supply motor innervation to
muscles of mastication, tensors tympani and palati
Is the skin over the angle of the mandible supplied by the trigeminal nerve
NO
supplied by cervical plexus
Where is the main trunk of the mandibular division found
BEFORE the division
Where are the branches that come from the main trunk
meningeal branch
branch to tensor tympani
branch to tensor veli palatine
nerve to medial pterygoid
Are the branches that come off the main trunk sensory or motor
motor except the meningeal branch
What does the meningeal branch (main trunk) provide
sensory info the the dura mater
What does the tensor tympani branch innervate
motor innervation to tensor tympani
What is tensor tympani
Tensor tympani attaches to the ossicles in the middle ear and control the vibration of the bones to dampen down loud sounds
What is the tensor veli palatini
Tensor veli palatini tenses the soft palate
Are the anterior trunk branches motor or sensory
motor except buccal nerve
What are the branches of the anterior trunk
deep temporal nerves
nerve to lateral ptergoid
buccal nerve
masseteric nerve
What is the deep temporal nerve supplying
temporalis
What should buccal nerve not be confused with
BUCCAL BRANCH OF FACIAL CRANIAL NERVE
What is the difference with the buccal nerve and buccal branch
§ The BUCCAL NERVE is found in the INFRATEMPORAL FOSSA, BEHIND the MANDIBLE, it is DEEP
The BUCCAL BRANCH of the FACIAL NERVE is SUPERFICIAL and MOTOR
Is the posterior trunk sensory or motor
sensory except from the inferior alveolar nerve that is MIXED
What are the branches of the posterior trunk
auriculotemporal
inferior alveolar nerve
lingual nerve
Where is the inferior alveolar nerve mixed
the superior part - before it divides
What part of the inferior alveolar is motor
□ Branch to the mylohyoid (muscle found in floor of the mouth which supports the oral cavity
What does the mandibular division provide
general sensation to the floor of the mouth along with the lower teeth & gums
general sensation to the anterior 2/3rd of the tongue (general somatic afferent) via the lingual nerve
The lingual nerve carries the chorda tympani nerve which is a branch of CN VII
What does the buccal nerve go to
cheek and lateral gum (ANTERIOR TRUNK)
What does the inferior alveolar nerve go to
The inferior alveolar nerve and it’s branch, the incisive nerve, go to the lower teeth
The inferior alveolar nerve goes to the skin of the chin and lower lip (both skin and mucous membranes) as the mental nerve
What does the motor component of inferior alveolar nerve supply
The mylohoid and anterior belly of digastric before entering the mandibular foramen to supply general sensation to the lower teeth
What does the mental nerve supply
provides the mucous membranes anteriorly
What does the lingual nerve supply regarding gingivae
palatal gingiva
What does the buccal nerve supply regarding gingivae
buccal gingivae
Wha does the main trunk of the interior alveolar nerve provide in regards to teeth
posterior
What does the incisive branch of the inferior alveolar nerve provide in regards to teeth
The incisive branch targets the anterior teeth
What provides general sensation to anterior 2/3 of tongue
mandibular division (CNV3) of trigeminal nerve is provided to the anterior 2/3 (oral part) of the tongue via the LINGUAL NERVE
What provides taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
Taste is provided to the anterior 2/3 (oral part) of the tongue by the FACIAL NERVE NOT TRIGEMINAL (chorda tympani of the facial nerve)
What supplies posterior 1/3 of tongue
glossopharyngeal, both special and general
What supplies the motor for the tongue
hypoglossal
What does the mandibular division provide other than the muscles of mastication
Tensor tympani muscle in the middle ear
Tensor palati (the latter via the branch to medial pterygoid)
Mylohyoid and anterior belly of digastric (via inferior alveolar branch)
What are the afferent and efferent component of jaw jerk reflex run by
trigeminal nerve
What is jaw jerk reflex
Mandible is tapped at a downward angle just below the lips at the chin while the mouth is held slightly open - in response the masseter muscles will jerk the mandible upwards
What does the jaw jerk reflex go through
It is sent to the mesencephalic nucleus of the trigeminal nerve and then it comes out through the trigeminal motor nucleus
If you are injecting a superficial nerve then what can you hit
If you are near a superficial nerve then you can hit the pterygoid plexus which is a venous plexus of considerable size that is situated between the lateral pterygoid and temporalis muscle
What happens if you hit a muscle accidentally
trismus
What muscle is in close proximity
medial pterygoid
What happens if you accidentally infiltrate the parotid gland
If you hit the parotid gland and infiltrate then you can anaesthetise the facial nerve which will result in facial nerve palsy resulting in unilateral, droopy mouth, eyes unable to close etc as the facial nerve supplies all the muscles of facial expression
