21
Q

Are the anterior trunk branches motor or sensory

A

motor except buccal nerve

22
Q

What are the branches of the anterior trunk

A

deep temporal nerves
nerve to lateral ptergoid
buccal nerve
masseteric nerve

23
Q

What is the deep temporal nerve supplying

A

temporalis

24
Q

What should buccal nerve not be confused with

A

BUCCAL BRANCH OF FACIAL CRANIAL NERVE

25
Q

What is the difference with the buccal nerve and buccal branch

A

§ The BUCCAL NERVE is found in the INFRATEMPORAL FOSSA, BEHIND the MANDIBLE, it is DEEP
The BUCCAL BRANCH of the FACIAL NERVE is SUPERFICIAL and MOTOR

26
Q

Is the posterior trunk sensory or motor

A

sensory except from the inferior alveolar nerve that is MIXED

27
Q

What are the branches of the posterior trunk

A

auriculotemporal
inferior alveolar nerve
lingual nerve

28
Q

Where is the inferior alveolar nerve mixed

A

the superior part - before it divides

29
Q

What part of the inferior alveolar is motor

A

□ Branch to the mylohyoid (muscle found in floor of the mouth which supports the oral cavity

30
Q

What does the mandibular division provide

A

general sensation to the floor of the mouth along with the lower teeth & gums

general sensation to the anterior 2/3rd of the tongue (general somatic afferent) via the lingual nerve

The lingual nerve carries the chorda tympani nerve which is a branch of CN VII

31
Q

What does the buccal nerve go to

A

cheek and lateral gum (ANTERIOR TRUNK)

32
Q

What does the inferior alveolar nerve go to

A

The inferior alveolar nerve and it’s branch, the incisive nerve, go to the lower teeth

The inferior alveolar nerve goes to the skin of the chin and lower lip (both skin and mucous membranes) as the mental nerve

33
Q

What does the motor component of inferior alveolar nerve supply

A

The mylohoid and anterior belly of digastric before entering the mandibular foramen to supply general sensation to the lower teeth

34
Q

What does the mental nerve supply

A

provides the mucous membranes anteriorly

35
Q

What does the lingual nerve supply regarding gingivae

A

palatal gingiva

36
Q

What does the buccal nerve supply regarding gingivae

A

buccal gingivae

37
Q

Wha does the main trunk of the interior alveolar nerve provide in regards to teeth

A

posterior

38
Q

What does the incisive branch of the inferior alveolar nerve provide in regards to teeth

A

The incisive branch targets the anterior teeth

39
Q

What provides general sensation to anterior 2/3 of tongue

A

mandibular division (CNV3) of trigeminal nerve is provided to the anterior 2/3 (oral part) of the tongue via the LINGUAL NERVE

40
Q

What provides taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue

A

Taste is provided to the anterior 2/3 (oral part) of the tongue by the FACIAL NERVE NOT TRIGEMINAL (chorda tympani of the facial nerve)

41
Q

What supplies posterior 1/3 of tongue

A

glossopharyngeal, both special and general

42
Q

What supplies the motor for the tongue

A

hypoglossal

43
Q

What does the mandibular division provide other than the muscles of mastication

A

Tensor tympani muscle in the middle ear
Tensor palati (the latter via the branch to medial pterygoid)
Mylohyoid and anterior belly of digastric (via inferior alveolar branch)

44
Q

What are the afferent and efferent component of jaw jerk reflex run by

A

trigeminal nerve

45
Q

What is jaw jerk reflex

A

Mandible is tapped at a downward angle just below the lips at the chin while the mouth is held slightly open - in response the masseter muscles will jerk the mandible upwards

46
Q

What does the jaw jerk reflex go through

A

It is sent to the mesencephalic nucleus of the trigeminal nerve and then it comes out through the trigeminal motor nucleus

47
Q

If you are injecting a superficial nerve then what can you hit

A

If you are near a superficial nerve then you can hit the pterygoid plexus which is a venous plexus of considerable size that is situated between the lateral pterygoid and temporalis muscle

48
Q

What happens if you hit a muscle accidentally

A

trismus

49
Q

What muscle is in close proximity

A

medial pterygoid

50
Q

What happens if you accidentally infiltrate the parotid gland

A

If you hit the parotid gland and infiltrate then you can anaesthetise the facial nerve which will result in facial nerve palsy resulting in unilateral, droopy mouth, eyes unable to close etc as the facial nerve supplies all the muscles of facial expression
