trigeminal nerve Flashcards
Trigeminal nerve other names
5th CN
Semilunar
Gasserian ganglion
Characteristics
arises from pons
3 branches (ophthalmic,maxillary,mandibular)
first brachial arch
sensory fibers to parasympathetic ganglia (ciliary, pterygopalatine, otic, submandibular)
Nuclear columns (somatic afferent)
a) spinal nucleus- pain & temp
b) sensory nucleus- touch & pressure
c) mesencephalic nucleus- proprioceptive
Nuclear columns (branchial afferent)
8 muscles from 1st branchial arch
Sensory components
cell bodies in trigeminal ganglion
at apex of petrous temporal bone in Meckel’s Cave
Motor component
4 muscles of mastication
4 other muscles: tensor veli palatini, tensor tympani, mylohyoid, anterior belly
Maxillary nerve
V2, purely sensory
trig. ganglion -> middle cranial fossa -> lateral wall of cavernous sinus -> foramen rotundum -> pterygopalatine fossa -> groove on post. surface of maxilla -> through infraorbital fissure-> infraorbital nerve -> infraorbital foramen
Maxillary division and branches (middle cranial fossa)
meningeal branch- supplies dura mater
Maxillary division and branches (pterygopalatine fossa)
ganglionic branches
zygomaticotemporal (sensory fibers & palatine branches)
zygomaticofacial (skin of cheeks and temple)
posterior superior alveolar (cheeks, gum, MB of 1st molar & max sinus)
Maxillary division and branches (infraorbital canal)
middle superior alveolar &
anterior superior alveolar
(max sinus, max teeth & gum)
Maxillary division and branches (face)
labial, palpebral, nose
(lower eyelid, side of nose & upper lip)
Extraction of maxillary teeth
Anterior/Middle/Posterior superior alveolar nerve is blocked
Mandibular nerve (characteristic)
largest mixed nerve
motor + sensory root below foramen ovale
leaves cranium -> infratemporal fossa
1st branchial arch
Mandibular nerve (division & branches)
FOV -> Meningeal branch (through foramen spinosum), Nerves spinosus ->
