What is trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is an STI caused by the protozoa trichomonas vaginalis
What are the complications of trichomonas infection?
Contracting HIV by damage to the vaginal mucosa
BV
Cervical cancer
PID
Pregnancy related complications eg preterm delivery
What is the presentation of trichomoniasis?
Vaginal discharge - frothy and yellow
Itching
Dysuria
Dyspareunia
Balanitis - inflammation to the glans penis
Strawberry cervix
Raised vaginal pH
How is trichomoniasis diagnosed?
Charcoal swab with microscopy
Women - posterior fornix swab, or low vaginal swab
Men - First catch urine or urethral swab
What is the management of trichomoniasis?
Oral metronidazole for 5-7 days
OR
2g PO metronidazole stat
