Where is chancroid common?
Most common in tropical and subtropical resource poor countries
What type of bacteria is Haemophilus ducreyi?
Gram negative coccobacillus
What are the risk factors for chancroid?
Unprotected sex
High number of sexual partners
Sex work
Cocaine use
Uncircumsised
How long after exposure do symptoms take to develop?
4-10 days
What is the presentation of chancroid?
Painful genital papules
Genital ulcers
Bleeding from lesions
Painful lymphadenopathy
What are the differentials of chancroid?
Syphilis
Herpes simplex
Lymphogranuloma venerum
What investigations can be used to confirm a diagnosis of chancroid?
Culture
PCR
Lymph node aspirate culture
What is the management of chancroid?
Antibiotic treatment - options include:
- Azithromycin
- Ciprofloxacin
- Ceftriaxone
