Prioritizing patients for treatment based on the severity of illness
What is reverse triage?
Most severely injured or ill victims who require greatest resources are treated last.
What is the purpose of reverse triage during a MCE?
allows greatest number of victims to get medical attention
Why should EMT’s be assigned to triage during a MCE?
Free’s physicians and nurses to provide care
What color tag would an immediate priority 1 have?
Red
What is an immediate priority 1?
life threatening injuries but, can survive
what are some examples of an immediate Priority 1 patient?
- -sucking chest wound
- -open fracture
- -2nd/3rd degree burns (15-40% TBSA)
- -shock
- -airway obstruction
What color tag would a delayed Priority 2 patient have?
Yellow
What is a delayed priority 2 category?
Injuries is significant but, can wait hours
what are some examples of delayed priority 2 patient?
- -stable wound (no hemorrhage)
- -soft tissue injury
- -fx. requiring open reduction
- -Eye and CS injuries
What color tag would a minimal priority 3 patient have?
Green
What is a minimal priority 3 category?
minor, tx. delayed hours to days
–move them away from triage area
What are some examples of a priority 3 patient?
- -minor burn
- -upper extremity fx., sprain
- -laceration w/o hemorrhage
- -psychological disturbances
What color would an expectant, priority 4 tag be?
Black
What is a priority 4 category?
chance of survival unlikely, even with treatment
