Tri A - Male Reproductive System Flashcards
What is the function of the Scrotum?
Supportive sac containing testes, epididymis, spermatic cords
Describe the structure of the Scrotum
-Composed of loose skin and superficial fascia
-Internally divided by scrotal septum
-Dartos and Cremaster can move testes closer or further from body
What is the function of the Testes?
Site of sperm production
Describe the Structure of the Testes
Divided into 200-300 lobules
Each lobule contains 3 coiled seminiferous tubules
Name and describe each tissue found in the Testes
Tunica Vaginalis - Covers most of testes, viscous fluid, lubricates testes
Tunica Albuginea - Fibrous Capsule - allows friction free movement
Tunica Vascuosa - Consists of capillaries supported by fine connective tissue
What is the function of the Epididymis?
Provides sperm storage
Describe the Structure of the Epididymis
Head - lobules formed by efferent ducts emptying into ductus epididymis
Body - coiled duct of epididymis
Tail - continues into Vas Deferens
Describe the tissue of the Epididymis
Lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium - surrounded by smooth muscle layers
Supported by fine areolar tissue
Columnar cells contain microvilli
What is the function of the Vas Deferens?
Transports sperms into the urethra
Passes through inguinal canal within spermatic cord along with: Testicular artery, testicular vein, nerves, lymphatic vessels
Describe the Inguinal Canal
Two passageways in anterior abdominal wall conveying spermatic cords
What is the function of the Ejaculatory Ducts?
Drain seminal fluid into prostatic urethra
Describe the structure of the Ejaculatory Ducts and what they are formed by
Composed of: - Outer Fibrous Coat
- Middle Muscular Layer
- Inner Lining of Columnar Epithelium
Formed by: - Vas Deferens
- Seminal Vesicle Duct
What is the function of the Seminal Vesicles?
Compress and expel fluid, pushing sperm through urethra
Describe the structure of the Seminal Vesicles
2 Fibro-muscular pouches, at base of bladder
What is the function of the Prostate?
Secretes thin fluid, helps mobility and fertility of sperm
