Compact - dense, outer layer
Cancellous - soft, spongy inside
What are the 5 bone catagories?
Long,
Short,
Flat,
Irregular,
Sesamoid
Name the 3 bone cells and their role?
Osteoblasts - bone forming cells
Osteocytes - mature bone cells
Osteoclasts - break down and reabsorb bone
Describe Long bones
Bone longer than wider
Expanded ends (epiphyses)
Describe Short bones
Usually cuboidal, same thickness, width
Support and structure
Describe Flat bones
Thin cancellous bone, 2 layers of compact bone
Protection and muscle attachment
Filled with red marrow
Describe Irregular bones
Protects nerve tissue, skeletal muscle attachment
Describe Sesamoid bones
Found near joints
Protects tendon as they move over bone
What is red marrow and where is it found?
Found within the bones
Makes red blood cells
