Tri A - Female Reproductive System Flashcards
What is the function of the Vagina?
Provides passageway for blood during period
Name and describe the 3 layers of the Vagina
Outer - areolar and elastic tissue, bundles of nerves and blood vessels
Middle - smooth muscle
Inner - stratified squamous epithelium
Describe the structure of the Uterus
(Not the layers)
Hollow, thin walled, muscular
4 parts: Fundus, Corpus, Ishmus, Cervix
Describe the 3 layers of the Uterus
Perimetrium - thinnest, outer layer
Myometrium - Thickest, middle layer, smooth muscular fibres with areolar tissue
Endometrium - Columnar epithelium, 2 layers
-Basal Layer- lies next to myometrium
and
-Functional Layer- inner layer, sheds
What is the function of the cervix?
Allows fluids in and out of the uterus
Describe the structure of the cervix
3-5cm length, muscular structure
Cervical Canal; Internal Orifice and External Orifice
What is the function of the Fallopian Tubes?
Tube for the egg to travel to the uterus
Describe the structure of the fallopian tubes
2 muscular tubes
5 sections: Fimbriae, infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, interstitial
3 Layers: Mucosa - inner layer - folds, lined by columnar epithelium
Myosalpinx - middle layer - smooth muscle layer
Serosa - outer layer - derived from visceral peritoneum
What is the function of the Ovaries?
Production of female gametes
Secretion of hormones
Describe the structure of the Ovaries
Capsule - germinal epithelium
- Tunica Albuginea
Stroma - Outer Cortical
- Inner medullary - loose connective tissue
What is the function of the Breast?
Produce milk
Describe the structure of the Breast
Each breast has ~20 lobes which divide into lobules for milk production
Connective tissue and Pectoral Fascia
