Conquistadors
Spanish for conqueror; Spanish explorers during the Age of Exploration (1500s)
What were THREE things that motivated Europeans explorers?
God, Gold, and Glory
What was the purpose of Portuguese exploration?
To sail around the southern tip of Africa to reach India
What was the Treaty of Tordesillas
Divided South America between Spain and Portugal (Brazil’s national language is Portuguese because of this, before this Portugal felt that Spain was given too much land)
Christopher Columbus
Italian explorer who sailed for Spain, thought he could sail WEST to the Indies (thought the world was smaller than it is), reached the Americas instead, treated the Indigenous Americans he encountered brutally
The Middle Passage
Sickeningly cruel, Africans were packed tightly into the dark holds of ships, frequent whippings and beatings, disease was widespread, 20% died on the journey, many committed suicide
Triangular Trade
1: Europeans transported manufactured goods to the west coast of Africa (guns)
2: human beings were transported across the Atlantic Ocean as slave labor
3: raw materials were brought back to Europe for a profit

Italy had a wealthy merchant class that was interested in supporting the arts.
How did humanism influence Renaissance art?
Humanism meant that Renaissance art was now focused on the individual and not on religion.
