Trench Warfare Flashcards
Why did we switch to trench warfare?
-The industrialization and newly invented machine gun/other weapons made it almost impossible to survive above ground
-Unable to withstand the power of artillery and the machine gun, soldiers had to escape into the ground.
- They shoveled out four foot deep trenches, piled sandbags, mounted machine guns and began to fight an unplanned defensive war.
Trench foot
-it was caused by having your feet submerged in water for an extended amount of time (days)
-to avoid trench foot soldiers were told to change socks often and rub whale oil on their feet
Trench rats
-rats as big as cats living in the trenches and would feed off of fallen soldiers
Lice
-Lice were everywhere. They left red blotchy red marks all over the body and were a constant annoyance.
● The bites often became infected (Trench Fever).
● This caused very high fever and shooting pains in the body.
● Hot baths, and delousing machines were used when soldiers were on leave,
but they didn’t kill the eggs.
● Within a short time, everything was infested again.
No mans land
disputed ground between the front lines or trenches of two opposing armies.
