General Trematode structure
flattened, oral sucker at anterior end, has a protective tegument, most commonly hermaphroditic (male and female in one)
Schistosomes
a bisexual fluke where the female lives in the crease of the male
Fasciola hepatica
common liver fluke of cattle and sheep, kills sheep (cirrhosis), makes cattle liver unusable d/t tracts
Black disease
concurrent infection of F. hepatica and Clostridium novyi
Fascioloides magna
large American fluke in elk, deer, moose; domestic ruminants are dead end hosts (sheep die, cattle have no signs)
Dicrocoelium dendriticum
lancet fluke, flat and pointed at both ends, more slender; affects ruminants and causes jaundice (bile duct obstruction)
paramphistomes
rumen flukes, immature flukes can be fatal in young animals
chlorsulon
treatment for flukes
Salmon poisoning in dogs
they eat raw salmon when they chillin in the PNW, caused by Nanophyetus and Neorickettsia –> fever, enlarged lymph nodes, neuro signs, GI signs
Echinostomiatidae spp
affect poultry essentially, hemorrhagic colitis
Schistosomes mainly affect what species?
dogs and cattle (not seen in the US)
