Q

Fair?

A

Fair - armed restrictions weren’t as bad : GER could still maintain internal order, weapons removed meant no expansionist war, Fr was nervous eg 1870 and 1914
Double standards: G did invade F in schlieffen plan 1912; they always wanted to fight the French
Economics: they recovered in 10 years- mid 1920s europes leading producers of steel, F finished war in worse state

Q

Not fair?

A

Guilt: ww1 was a result of mass rearmament across Europe, the murder of Franz Ferdinand triggered alliances to declare war on each other. German civilians punished - economy destroyed and allies demanded too high reparations. Kaiser and military officers were never punished
Treaty motivated by Br and Fr greed: overseas colonies given to them, saarland controlled by F and the navy went to B
