Who were the ‘Big Three’?
The leaders of France, Great Britain and the USA. They were nicjnamed the ‘Big Three’ because they represented the three mostpowerful winning countries.
What was David Lloyd Georges aim to do with the losing country Germany?
Wanted to ‘hang the Kaiser’ and ‘make Germany pay’. He wanted to keep Germany weak; however he also wanted to avoid humiliating them. Lloyd George wanted terms of reparation that would not cripple the German economy, so that Germany would remain a viable economic power and trading partner.

He wanted to prevent Germany becoming aggressive but didn’t think they should be punished. He thought that a punishment that was too harsh would cause another war.

In June 1919, the politicians sent out a huge document called the Treaty of Versailles. German politicians were swnt over so sign it or face invasion…they signed it.
What punishments did the Treaty of Versialles include?
- Germany must pay for the war in money and goods. The figure was set to £6, 600 million (£6.6 billion).
- Germany to have no air force, submarines or tanks. Only a tiny army and navy. No German soldier was allowed near France.
- Germany to hand over colonies to Britain and France
- Parts of countries were cut of to make new countries
- League of Nations set up. All countries should join this so they can talk about their problems rather than fight.
What was the Leage of Nations for?
It was set up with the idea behind it to settling problems peacefully by discussion rather than war.
