Treatment planning for single tooth restorations Flashcards
Treatment planning for single tooth restorations
The selection of the material and design of the restoration is based on several factors
1. Destruction of tooth structure
2. Esthetics
3. Plaque control
4. Financial considerations
5. Retention
Biological considerations
-Preservation of tooth structure
-Avoid overcontouring
-Supragingival margins
-Harmonious occlusion
-Protection against tooth fracture
Mechanical considerations
-Retention form
-Resistance form
-Deformation
Esthetic considerations
-Minimum display of metal
-Maximum thickness of porcelain
-Porcelain occlusal surfaces
-Supragingival margins
5 principles of tooth preparation
- Preservation of tooth structure
- Retention and resistance
- Structural durability
- Marginal integrity
Preservation of tooth structure
-Use partial coverage rather than full coverage crowns
-Prepare teeth with minimal taper
-Follow anatomical planes of the tooth to give uniform thickness of the restoration
-Prepare axial walls so that tooth structure is evenly removed and surrounding pulpal tissue is retained
-Selection of marginal geometry that is conservative and yet compatible with other principles of tooth preparation
-Avoidance of unnecessary apical extension of the preparation
