Treatment Planning for Dentures Flashcards
Define support.
Resistance of vertical movement of a denture towards the ridge.
Is support better in the upper or lower jaw/ denture?
Much better in UPPER.
What conditions can affects peri-oral opening?
- Systemic lupus erythematosus.
- Collagen lip implants.
What is the significance of TMJ disfunction for denture provision?
Affects jaw opening and thus affects the process of registering occlusion.
What is the significance of neuromuscular problems for denture provision?
ex. motorneuron disease.
Patients cant control their jaw very well
What pathogens (3) cause angular cheilitis? Which patients often have it?
- Candida albicans, beta hemolytic streptococci, staph aureus.
- Seen in patients with very worn dentures (making mouth over-close) OR dry mouth.
Why is tooth prognosis important for denture design?
Do not want to clasp a tooth which will soon be lost
Which part of the lower arch may require relief during denture provision?
prominent genial tubercles.
Define stability.
Ability of a denture to resist displacement by functional stresses. Ex. on CHEWING (patient may stay in place at REST hence has good RETENTION yet moves when the patient EATS or SPEAKS, hence has poor STABILITY).
Denture fits well at rest but moves when the patient eats and speaks. What does this mean?
Good retention
Poor stability
What is the significance of tremor for denture provision?
Difficult to record occlusion as teeth do not occlude properly.
Lower denture support:
- Primary: retromolar pad + buccal shelf.
- Secondary: alveolar ridge.
A patient comes in with denture hyperplasia. Cause? Treatment?
- Denture digs into an area of mucosa, causing fibrous tissue formation.
- Take acrylic bur and trim the denture. Ask patient to come back after a few weeks to monitor if the area has resolved.
What are index teeth?
Point of contact of opposing teeth in the intercuspal position.
Define adaptation
the degree of fit between a prosthesis and supporting structures.
