Cells live for only a few days once infected.
What actions does an anti-retroviral drug carry out?
Neutralizes antibody, complement and phagocytes.
What are some issues HIV treatments face?
Drug resistance. Long-term toxicity of anti-retroviral agents.
List some needs for prolonged survival of a HIV positive individual?
. Anti-retroviral agents
.Immunization
.Chemoprophylaxis
.Aggressive treatment of infections and malignancies
.Triple therapy-HAART in symptomatic patients. CD4 is below 500mm/cm^3 OR viral load is less than 50,000 copies/ml.
What are the issues with AIDS vaccines?
They must have NO risk of causing disease.
What is an issue with HIV-1 vaccines?
Production of memory cytotoxic T-Cells requires an infection of antigen presenting cells.
What is preventing a HIV-1 vaccine from being produced?
Memory killer T-cells are required to be produced and this NEEDS antigen presenting cells to be infected.
