What is flooding?
A
An extreme form of behavioural therapy

What does flooding entail?
A
Exposing an individual to the feared object or situation straight away

How does flooding work?
A
Overcomes the operant conditioning.
The individual is unable to perform their avoidance behaviour so there phobia declines through continuous exposure to the object

What are the two types of flooding?
A
In vitro - imaginary exposure
In vivo - actual exposure

What are strengths of flooding?
A
- It is cost effective and quicker
- Highly effective for simple phobias

What are weaknesses of flooding?
A
- It is highly traumatic and many don’t complete treatment because of this
- It is not effective with all phobias
- Ethical considerations, it is psychologically harmful
