The idea that is behaviour can be learned then it can be unlearned and replaced with a more adaptive behaviour
What are the 3 steps of systematic desensitisation?
- Training the client to relax
- Constructing a hierarchy of fear
- Gradual exposure
What happens in the relaxation step?

What is the heirarchy of fear?
Coming up with a range of situations in which the client might feel anxious and then arranging them in order form least to most fearful
What is gradual exposure?
Client presented the the fear situation, they are encouraged to relax in the presence of the stimulus until the anxiety reduces
How long does systematic desensitisation usually take?
6-8 sessions but intense phobias might require more
What is flooding?
Puts a client through a massive exposure of the phobia immediately with no opportunity to escape
What is the idea of of flooding?
To flood the client with anxiety in order to make them realise that their anxiety has a limit and will eventually come down
What are 3 evaluation points for systematic desensitisation?
- Effective for a particular phobia, less effective with social phobias
- Suitable for diverse range of patients
- Need motivation and takes long time
What are 3 evaluation points for flooding?
- Cheaper and quicker
- Less effective for social phobias
- Traumatic (high levels of fear)
