What does CBT aim to do?
Alter abnormal behaviour by changing the faulty thoughts that lie behind the maladaptive behaviour
What is CBT?
Active form or therapy which focuses on the here and now
What are the 2 parts of CBT?
- Cognitive part
- Behavioural part
What does the cognitive part aim to do?
Identify and alter the faulty or irrational thinking processes that are affecting the client
What does the behavioural part aim to do?
Identify and alter the dysfunctional behaviours which are contributing to the depression
What are the 4 techniques used in CBT?
- Behavioural activation
- Graded homework assignments
- Thought catching
- Challenge negative thinking
What is behavioural activation?
Client identifies activities they used to enjoy doing and then works with the counsellor to address and overcome the dysfunctional thoughts that currently stop them from doing the activities
What is graded homework assignments?
Each week the clients had to try out new ways of thinking and behaving which will become increasingly challenging
What is thought catching?
The client keeps a diary of the negative automatic thoughts that occur during the week and then alone and with the therapist they will consider how these may be challenged
What is challenge negative thinking?
The therapist will question the client in ways which help the client challenge their negative thinking
What is Ellis’ rational emotive behavioural therapy (rebt)?
Therapy aimed at turing a client’s irrational thoughts into rational ones
What does Ellis strongly believe?
In the importance of a therapist demonstrating unconditional positive regard to their clients
What are 3 evaluation points of CBT?
- CBT is effective: reduces symptoms, help prevents relapse
- Takes a long time and needs motivaton
- Good for economy
