treating of phobias flooding Flashcards
define flooding
immediately exposing people with a phobia to phobic stimulus without a gradual build up through the anxiety hierarchy
explain flooding through classical conditioning
flooding works by stopping the phobic responses as without the option of avoidance behaviour clients learn that the phobic stimulus is harmless. In classical conditioning this is called extinction
what do clients have to give before starting flooding?
informed consent
explained how the process to making the conditioned stimulus not produce the conditioned response with application to fear of dogs
the conditioned stimulus (dog) is encountered without the unconditioned stimulus (being bitten)
so conditioned stimulus doesn’t produce conditioned response (fear)
