What are the components of Beck’s cognitive therapy?
Identify negative beliefs, challenging these beliefs and set homework
What is involved in identifying negative beliefs?
The negative triad used to identify beliefs about self, world and future
What is involved in challenge the beliefs?
Test the reality of beliefs through rational arguments/evidence
What is involved in setting homework?
Patient records events and tries new things to test reality of beliefs
What does Ellis’ rational-emotive behaviour use?
The ABCDE model
What is involved in the ABCDE model?
A - activating event, B - beliefs (irrational), C - consequences, D - dispute and E - effective rational belief
What are the 2 ways of disputing irrational beliefs?
Empirical or logical arguments
What is an empirical argument?
Shows that the patient is factually mistake - e.g. if someone thinks they are useless, get them to gather physical evidence of their successions
What is a logical argument?
Showing that the patient is drawing an unjustified conclusion - e.g. if the patient beelines they will fail based of a previous failure, prove to them that you get up and try again
What is research support for CBT?
March et al. investigated effect of CBT on 327 adolescents
What are the findings of research support?
After 36 weeks, 81% of CBT group, 81% of antidepressant group and 86% of CBT + antidepressants has significantly improved
What is a strength of CBT?
It is brief therapy with 6-12 sessions so its cost effective
What is a limitation of CBT?
It is unsuitable for patients with learning difficulties or patients who are so severe cannot pay attention as a lot of work is required.
