Evidence for Effectiveness
Supporting evidence
March et al
- CBT and antidepressants were 81% effective
- when together it’s 86%
CBT was just as effective as AD
- more effective together
CBT is usually 1st choice
Suitability for Diverse Clients
- not effective for those with severe depression or learning disabilities
- Sturmey
:psychotherapy is not suitable for learning disabilities - too difficult, not motivated for homework
VS: evidence that challenges the view CBT is unsuitable- Lewis & Lewis and Taylor
: CBT is effective for learning dis.
- CBT may be suitable for a diverse group
- therapy is crediable
Relapse Rates
- high relapse rates-Ali et al
: 42% relapse within 6 months
: 53% within a year - benefits are not very long lasting or permanent
- CBT may need to be repeated
Client Preference
- client prefer other methods
- Yrondi et al
: CBT least prefered - clients have different motivations
: explore trauma
: get rid of symptoms quickly - other forms of therapy should be more prevalent
