Bite wounds
lead to serious infection and can develop rapid
Inoculation of oral flora into the skin, local infection, abscess pain, loss of function
Osteomyelitis, meningitis, sepsis, endocarditis, brain abscess, disease transmission
Use antiseptic and antimicrobial topicals
check lymph nodes adjacent to injury
follow up 24-48 hours post injury
human bite wound
Antibiotics and tetanus is typical
High risk of infection
Hepatitis and HIV need to be considered
Dog bites
lacerations punctures crush injuries
Rabies
Very low infection rate with treatment
Need to involve local health authorities
cat bites
tiny sharp teeth
Deep puncture wounds, difficult to irrigate higher rate of infection with puncture wounds
Consider opening with scalpel for easier cleaning- surgical consult
bite treatments
short term use of antiseptics if at risk for infection
Thorough irrigation
Aggressive debridement
Test sensation, monitor for infection
