Q

List treatment for a thermal burn

A

Flame - wet down, smother then remove affected clothing
Semi solid (tar, wax, grease) - cool with water but don’t remove.
Ensure open airway and assess breathing, look for signs of injury
Complete primary assessment
Treat for shock
Evaluate depth (superficial, partial, or full), extent (rule of 9’s or palm), and severity.
Do not clear debris; remove clothing/jewelry
Wrap with dry sterile dressing
Hands or feet - separate fingers or toes with sterile gauze pads after removing rings/clothes

Q

What’s the treatment for hyperthermia in an adult

A

Remove patient from hot environment placed in cool environment
Administer oxygen by nonrebreather at 15 L a minute
Loosen or remove clothing to cool the patient by fanning watch for shivering
Put the patient in supine position
If patient is responsive and not nauseated give small sips of water. If nausea or vomiting do not give more water and be alert for vomiting or airway problems.
Transport patient on left side
If patient experiences muscular cramps apply moist towels over cramped muscles

Or patients with hot skin
remove from hot environment remove clothing
apply cool packs to neck groin and armpits
keep skin wet by applying water administer high flow O2
transport immediately
