what is trauma??
trauma results from an event/multiple events/circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the persons functioning and physical, social, emotional or spiritual wellbeing.
what are some different types of trauma?
- acute
- complex
- neglect
- historical/intergenerational
- sanctuary/harm or betrayal trauma
what is childhood trauma?
prolonged exposure to repetitive or severe events such as child abuse, likely to cause the most severe and lasting effects.
trauma in the early years shapes the brain and psychological development, sets up vulnerability to stress and to a range of MH problems
what are the 3 E’s?

what are some syx of trauma?
physical stress response hyper-vigalance triggers - everywhere dissociation numbing amnesia, flashbacks insomnia self harm guilt/shame difficulty trusting others/ rship boundary issues
how to people respond to trauma??
fight
flight
freeze
submit
- shutting down of non-essential tasks
- rational thought is le possible at this time
what are ACE’s??
adverse childhood experiences.
- experienced prior to 18 years
- higher ACE score = higher chance of risky behaviour (alcohol, drugs, smoking)
long term effects of trauma?
higher ACE score means higher chance of experiencing:
- alcholism+drug use
- COPD
- depression
- heart disease
- obesity
- suicide attempts
- intimate partner violence (IPV)
- STI’s
what are some protective factors for children at risk of ACE’s?
- ONE OLDER SUPPORTIVE PERSON
- MASTERY OF A SKILL
- INVOLVEMENT WITH A GROUP (church, sport)
- strength of mother-partner r/ship
- parental health + wellness
- strength of parent-child r/ship
- parental finances
- neighbourhood+community characteristics
how to best work with/ care for people who have been through trauma?
- safety (keeping door open, choice of gender)

what is ACUTE STRESS DISORDER?
transient anxiety response to severe trauma
syx of anxiety, disturbance of thoughts, dreams, flash backs
for dx must last b/w 2-31 days
if persists after 1 month or starts after 1 month = PTSD
what is PTSD?
POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER =long lasting anxiety response following a traumatic event response is delayed - 1 month to years later SYX: images, dreams, flashbacks intrusive memories avoidance of cues/triggers depressed/irritable mood social withdrawal
