What is bipolar disorder?
a mood disorder that involves fluctuations from depressive lows to manic highs
what are some symptoms of mania?
increased activity decreased need for sleep risky behaviour-drugs, sex, investments increased self esteem flight of ideas distractability increase in goal directed activity
what are some symptoms of depression?
depressed mood negative thoughts agitation feeling slowed fatigue significant weight changes sleep alterations social withdrawl loss of interest
what are some causation theories of mental health disorders?
- genetics
- trauma
- stress
- lack of resilience
- for depression = low levels of serotonin in the brain
- for psychosis= high levels of dopamine in brain
what is schizophrenia?
disorder that involves both positive and negative symptoms.
positive sympyoms + such as delusions, halluciantions, movement disorders, disorganised thought and cognition.
negative symptoms - such as blunt affect, poverty of speech/thought, social withdrawl, facial expressions
what is psychosis?
when a person is unable to distinguish b/w what is real and what is not. might experience delusions, hallucinations, disorganised thoughts/ behaviour
name some different types of delusions.
controlling persecutory referential delusions religious delusions grandiose delusions
what is an intellectual disability?
a person who has an IQ of less than 70.
- concurrent defects/impairment in adaptive functioning (communication, self care, reading, work leisure)
- apparent prior to 18 years old
