Pre-Contemplation
Tend to avoid acknowledging their high risk behaviours
May be uninformed of the risk factors
Does not think about changing in the next six months
Maybe has tried and failed before> discouraged
Contemplation
Acknowledges having a problem
Seriously considers behaviour change
Gathers information, maybe verbalises goal
(Some may only get this far or be stuck here for months)
Change when they focus on solution over problem and think of future not past
Preparation
Intends to take action within month
Finalised plans
May even start small behaviour changes
Action
Actively implements behavioural and cognitive strategies to change to reach goal
Requires most energy and commitment
Maintenance
Lasts until person no longer experiences temptation
Person incorporates avoidance and coping strategies into lifestyle
May re-lapse into pre-contemplation phase
Termination
Person is no longer tempted and has complete confidence they will maintain behaviour.
